Philosophy of Nursing

Nursing is the art, science, and discipline of caring for people through the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health and wholeness across the life span. The essence of nursing involves communication, critical thinking, collaboration, caring, education, advocacy, ethical behavior, and a commitment to life-long learning. Nurses contribute collaboratively and independently to quality client care, education, research, and responsible resource stewardship. Nurses practice in a variety of roles and settings where nursing roles are determined by education and appropriate competencies.

Nursing education is both experiential and theoretical. It draws from adult learning principles which the student is an active participant with progressive responsibility for independent learning. Nursing education is a dynamic process which stimulates intellectual inquiry, independent judgment, critical thinking and the internalization of professional values as well as skills. Students are initially motivated to learn through carefully guided experiences. Scientific objectivity and analysis are essential critical thinking skills for nurses. As the student prepares for roles of increasing nursing complexity the educational process becomes more inquiry based. Nursing education is best facilitated via institutions of higher learning and through partnerships between the students, faculty, clients, families, communities, health care delivery systems/agencies and professional groups.
